We followed the Freedom Trail to Charlestown to see the naval yard and Bunker Hill. Charlestown is an affluent neighborhood with a beautiful obelisk and building memorializing the Battle of Bunker Hill which actually began on Breeds Hill.
The U.S.S. Constitution was part of the navy commissioned by John Adams. It played a part in many battles In the War of 1812 and kept winning until ironclad ships replaced her in the Civil War. She was nicknamed ‘old ironsides’ because live oak was used in her construction and it resisted the cannon fire during battle. We were able to walk around and explore the inside of the ship which housed 400-450 men at one time.
