Fort McAllister, Georgia State Park. Campground on Savage Island.

We toured the fort and the little museum attached. A young Ranger was super passionate about history which made it fun. This earthen fort was the last to be taken by Sherman at the end of his March to the Sea. The fort which was intact in late 1864, attempted to keep supply ships from Sherman’s troops which badly needed the supplies. The fort with approximately 150 soldiers fought back for only a few minutes. Thousands of Sherman’s troops got past the palisades and controlled the area after 15 minutes.

Sherman’s bow ties are found through out the south. Railroad lengths were held over a fire and twisted so as to never be used again. Earthen edges of the fort, underground barracks and cannons that look across Ogeechee River, south of Savannah.
