The grave and monument to Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce (English name) was near the lake. The American government promised that he would could return to the land he promised his father to never leave. He was imprisoned and did not return to his beloved Wallowa Mountains until after he died. The view from the trail near the monument was beautiful! Oregon seemed to do a pretty good job of preserving public land near here.
